Yesterday morning, Sandugo, an alliance of Moro and indigenous peoples for self determination, protested in front of the U.S. Embassy to demand an end of U.S. domination in the Philippine’s political, economic, and cultural affairs. As the rally ended, Senior Marcelino Pedroso of the Manila Police District ordered police to run their vehicles against the protesters. Over fifty people were injured, and 29 were arrested and taken to the police headquarters.
In April 2016, Bay Area Filipino organizations, such as ABSV and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines NorCal (ICHRP NorCal), hosted the Lakbay Lumad Speaking Tour where indigenous leaders spoke on the militarization they experience daily from police and army forces. This violent dispersal is a continuation of the Philippine National Police’s fascist oppression towards national minorities. ABSV continues our solidarity and we demand for the Philippine Government to hold the perpetrators accountable for this violent action towards indigenous communities calling for a just and lasting peace!
