On Wednesday, April 18, 2018, ABSV (Anakbayan Silicon Valley), SAHE (Student Advocates for Higher Education), SQE (Students for Quality Education), and SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine), came together in solidarity to host a cultural night entitled “Activism is Not a Crime” at San Jose State University.
On Tuesday, May 23, in response to the recent clash between the Maute group and the AFP in city of Marawi, President Duterte declared martial law on the entire island of Mindanao including Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-tawi. Under Martial Law the writ of habeas corpus is suspended, giving the government the power to arrest and detain any person without any cases filed against the person when the crime is allegedly rebellion. This is a serious threat to the people’s liberties.
The spirit of resistance is alive and well in San Jose, California, as thousands of community members have taken to the streets in recent weeks to voice their concerns over the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump. Anakbayan Silicon Valley, a progressive organization of Filipino youth, have been leaders on the ground for three mobilizations, all taking place in downtown San Jose.
